Question: New computer?
I am getting a new laptop this weekend because of the tax free weekend. I ama university student, so will it be classified as school supplies in order to recieve the no tax discount?
Also, I need some advice on what kind of computer. I want a Mac, but is it very difficult to learn? Is it useful at the collegiate level? I plan on getting Microsoft office for it so that I can have word and excel for assignments. Is it worth it? Or should I go with a PC such as Dell or HP. If you say PC please tell me which brand and model and why. Thanks for your help!
Answer: First of all congrats on getting the new laptop idea. Ok here are the answers to your many questions,
1. Yes it should qualify as a school supplies.
2. Ok some people love MAC and some love PC. I was a PC fan for long time until now when I bought the new macbook air. If you are using MAC for first time, then yes it will be little difficult to get acquainted with the MAC interface. But hey once you know the game, its all fun. Best part is you dont need to worry about any VIRUS on MAC.
3. I think both MAC and PC can be used same at college level . All depends on how much money you willing to spend. MAC are more expensive then PC in general.
4. Yes its is worth to buy MS office for MAC or PC.if your plan to use excel or word or powerpoint etc.
5. If you plan to buy PC, my recommendation is to get HP or DELL. But this is really depend on what you are comfortable with. Some ppl go for style, slickness, color etc in addition to the specs. Why i say PC or DEll is that I also own an HP and its super. Keys are really soft, screen is very durable, and ofcourse HP customer support is awesome. Good luck.

Question: Buying Condo, what kind of extra fees can I expect?
I am planning to buy condo and pay all the money upfront, this means I will not be taking out any mortgage. So lets say condo costs 300k what others fees should I expect to pay, for example tax, etc..? Please list the fees and how much they would be if condo costs 300k and I pay the whole sum upfront. Also please note this is a brand new development which was just build so I would be buying directly from developer. Its a 16 units condo building in Brooklyn, New York.
Please give an actual $$$$$ ammounts of actual fees on the 300k condo I want to know how much I will actually have to pay….
Answer: With the information you have provided you cannot expect exact figures but I can help with you basis to come up with a pretty good guessestimate.
1/ Real estate taxes - these are levied based either on assessed value or fair maket value. Say the applicable real estate tax rate for your locality is $1.00 (pls. find out what it is) then the real estate taxes assessefd would be $1.00/$100 of $300k which is $3,000 annually.
2/ Property insurance....an estimate used by lenders is $500/$200,000 of market value which would be $500/$200,000 of $300k....$750 annually.
3/ Condo dues...can vary greatly but typically btw $100 - $250 per month or ...assume highest value to be conservative...
Total costs = $3,000 + $750 + ($250x12) = $6,750...does not factor utilities and other erlated expenses such as phone, cable etc.....

Question: Moving out of the country with work – wanting sources of info for tax and legal guidelines etc.?
Hi
Next year I plan to move to South Africa with my husband and daughter. I have already got accommodation sorted and am employed by a British company that will be paying me (and my tax & NIC) – ie we’ll be seconded to a SA base. We’ll be out for the majority of the year, just back for a few weeks each Christmas. We’ll go on a volunteers visa. I have spent considerable time there previously.I want to start investigating all the connected issues from:
* who do i need to inform legally
* what is my tax status
* do I have maximum times to remain eligible for british health benefits
* can i get tax credits
* can i voteBut also local general living info – such as a good cook book as I can’t find the same ingredients there as in the UK.
My question is:
Can anyone recommend a good site or book or magazine that would cover these general issues. Perhaps a forum for the living advice – or if you have experience and could give any thoughts they would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Question: The IRS was not very clear for people who owed?
“Q. I plan to choose direct debit to pay my tax bill. I know my economic stimulus payment will not automatically be direct deposited based upon the direct debit information I’ve provided to pay my tax bill, but can I also enter direct deposit information to receive my stimulus payment by direct deposit?
A. Some tax preparation software will allow this, some will not. You will have to make this determination based on your own review of the tax preparation software you use. If the tax software allows you to enter both direct debit (electronic funds withdrawal), as well as direct deposit information, doing so will allow your economic stimulus payment to be direct deposited. [New 3/20/08]”
Turbo Tax ONLY gave me the option to fill out the DD info and it was taken out by “IRS USATAXPYMT” so does that mean we should expect a deposit or not?
When I say DD info I mean direct DEPOSIT not debit.
The refund line is filled in even though I as not owed one so….
Answer: That depends on how TT actually sent it to the IRS when they transmitted your return. So unless there are some TT programmers on the board who know how it works internally, or someone with the same situation has already gotten or not gotten their deposit, you'll have to wait and see. Not a very satisfactory answer, I know.

Fundraising Ideas College Campus

Question: College club fundraising ideas?
What are some really successful and profitable fund raising events or ideas for a college club?
I’ve just been given the position of VP of Programming, which entails coordinating such events as fund raisers. I would love to hear what you think! What would you, as a college student, stop and BUY for a few bucks on campus?
For example, would you pay 2 or 3 bucks for an In-N-Out burger?…
Answer: I already do pay 2 or 3 bucks for an In-N-Out burger.
There's a college nearby where I live and occassionally they do car washes at a corner lot of a pretty busy street. When it was warm and the girls were in shorts and bikini tops, and the guys were bare chested, they were doing a bang up business. The next weekend it was cold and it was sweats and sweatshirts and not much business.
