Question: How do you know your christmas donations are going to the starving and homeless?

and not to greedy managers that you hear so negatively about, , i want to donate to the salvation army or some other charity to feed the homeless at christmas, but unless i can go out personally and hand them the money or food, how do i REALLY know if its going to good use, ive heard some horror stories that the managers drive around in flashy cars (maybe not the salvation army) but it has been documented that only 15% of any donating goes to the actual people mostly needs it. is it a con, how do you actually know where its going. in proof.

Answer: For Thanksgiving, I donated to a family that lives near by. I know the father lost his job, mother has health problems and they have kids of various ages. I did up a big box with a turkey and all the fixings and threw in a bunch of things for them to at least have a nice dinner. Not knowing how to give it, I simply knocked on their door the Monday before Thanksgiving and told them I had all this extra food I didn't need and wanted them to have it. They were so grateful and happy. For Christmas, I'm going to do the same. I know it will be useful, needed items going to a family that I know really needs the help. I learned that this is the true spirit of Christmas. My husband and I no longer give each other gifts. We have what we need and want the folks in need to at least have a happy holiday. So, if you personally know of a family near by in need.......and that could be as close as your next door neighbor these days, help them out. This way you KNOW where it is going and to those who really need it. I see their kids could use new winter coats. So, I got their sizes and will buy that for them, along with a few items I know the whole family will enjoy. I never felt my money more well spent. Merry and blessed Christmas to you and your family.

You can call it by different names but a fundraiser gala has an elegant ring to it, doesn’t it?

But in essence you can hold a fundraiser gala for just about any cause or purpose you believe in. It just takes a little more planning than a typical fundraising dinner. Just calling it a gala gives people the expectation that they are attending a special event.

When you think of a fundraiser gala, you might think of this, which was in Sun Herald on March 5, 2006:

Tickets are now available for Walter Anderson Museum of Art’s Gala XVI spring fundraiser on April 7 at the museum in Ocean Springs. The annual event will celebrate the resilience of the community, the artists and the museum, which opened in spring 1991 and is beginning its 15th year of operation.

Or you might imagine this published in the Denver Post on March 16, 2006:

For its biggest fundraiser of the year, Catholic Charities of Colorado Springs holds a gala on the feast of St. Patrick. There’s never much need to discuss the menu. St. Patrick’s Day without corned beef and cabbage is like Thanksgiving without turkey.

The point is that when you add the word gala to the word fundraiser people expect to attend a very special event that is supporting a wonderful cause. So, before planning your next fundraising event take stock of your organization and why it is raising money. Is it a cause many people relate to? Are there people well known in your community that share a passion for your cause? Can you get them to attend your event as celebrity guests? Can you put together an informative yet entertaining program about your fundraising cause?

If you can answer yes to those questions you may be the right kind of group to hold a fundraiser gala. It just takes a little imagination to turn a fundraising dinner that will generate some decent fundraising proceeds into a large scale fundraiser gala that can raise much, much more money for your group. You decide which way to go.

In the US today it’s possible to donate a vehicle (usually a car, but it can be a truck, RV, boat or any form of transportation) to selected charities, and in return be able to claim a tax deduction on a personal income tax return. For values that are less than $500, the value of the tax deduction comes from the donor’s own estimate of the car’s value, even if the charity receives less money for actually selling the car. In 2005, the IRS rules were tightened to prevent donors from pumping up their deductions. Under the new rules, the deduction depends on how the charity disposes of the vehicle.

If your junk or used automobile, truck, boat, motorcycle, RV or aircraft is no longer of use to you, it can still go a long way toward supporting the charity of your choice. Make sure you know where the title is when you email about a possible donation. Best of all, by not selling the car yourself, you don’t have to worry about strangers calling you to get information about where you live, or coming to your house to see the car or other vehicle.

Repairable used donate car for blind children or other vehicles can be accepted provided the vehicle is repairable for less than what the charity could sell it for. There are a few exceptions in the new tax law compared to the old tax law, regarding the fair market value section, for example, you may base your deduction on the vehicle’s fair market value if the charity ends up selling it to a needy individual at a discounted price or if the charity uses the car as part of its mission instead of selling it at a fair price. Charitable car donations are given to the selected recipients directly or they are sold and the money is given away as part of the charity function.

A charity organization car donation is usually picked up within one or two days of submitting the donation form. The amount you list on IRS Form 1098-C, “Contributions of Motor Vehicles, Boats, and Airplanes” will be under the gross proceeds of the deductible donation. And if you don’t plan to deduct the vehicle donation on your tax return, no further action is needed. There are similar car donation tax laws in other countries.

You may have a junk, used or old vehicle sitting on your property or on the street that you don’t use very often or at all. Cars or other vehicle that are not being used make good donations, enabling many less fortunate people to have a good means of transportation. Donating rather than selling is a good idea because there is no need to pay for any advertising, no loss of privacy and possible security risk, and no need to pay for vehicle registration, insurance or repairs to keep your car in running condition while you wait for a buyer.

Charities look at car donations from both the point of view of the donor of the car, and of the charity receiving it. The vehicle you plan to donate must not have any major parts missing. Also the donor is responsible to an extent to determine what the value is of their car donation for blind children.

One of the exceptions to the new IRS regulations allows donors to still deduct the fair market value of their vehicle, if the charity materially improves the car or vehicle. Regardless of the laws, it’s a very good idea to protect yourself by having the proper insurance coverage on your vehicle until it’s donated. In wear and tear, minor repairs and breakdowns, an average vehicle owner could easily spend $3000 per year.

Don’t let your unused vehicle go to waste just sitting around gathering rust. It’s easy to donate your car online to individual charities or to car donation programs that work for charities. Some charities that run their own program instead of hiring a car donation program middleman are discriminating about which vehicles they accept, repair and materially improve. They sell most of the donated vehicles at retail.

Also, if your car or vehicle is running, consider dropping it off at the charity yourself to save the organization from paying for towing costs. After making a connection by email or phone with the charity or charity program, just fill out the forms they give you and have them ready for the driver when he/she comes to pick up the car.

There are many charitable Donate My Car Help Blind Children programs to choose from today including: Purple Heart, Kidney Foundation, Our Lady of the Wayside, Salvation Army, Goodwill Industries, Make a Wish Foundation, American Red Cross, and blind, Jewish and cancer charities among many others.

Question: How do I donate a car to an EV developer?

I have a 1999 Saturn SL1 with 160K miles.
Free to the right person.
It is a 5 speed standard in fairly good condition except the engine.
Once too often I let the oil change go a week too long, or so. Now there is a clacking noise coming from one of the internal bearings.
This car would make a great electric conversion and I will give it to anyone wishing to use it for this project. (technically I will sell it to you for $1.00, unless you are an established charity able to handle donations.)

The current registration is good until November. It is currently in the Sebago Lakes Region of Maine, and the engine is good for some unknown number of miles. Maybe 100, maybe 10k? I have removed the car from my insurance policy, and the state inspection is overdo.

Answer: ----
Easy! Advertise it on this board (it's free) where the EV builders hang out.

You could sell it, or donate it. Sounds like someone would be glad to have it.
