Value Donations Goodwill

Question: I heard that now you have to itemize your donated items to Goodwill to get tax credit. Is that true?

We used to just take a carload of stuff to Goodwill and just estimate the overall value but now I heard you have to itemize every single thing to qualify for tax credit. I’ve got a bunch of stuff and would like to know this answer before dropping it off at a donation center.

Answer: You don't really have to but it would be a good idea if you donate a lot. "a lot" would have to be checked with the IRS and your state.

Is the Salvation Army more of a thrift store like goodwill or a charity?

I’ve heard of people (who aren’t exactly poor) who decide they like thrift stores so much that they decide to shop there regularly instead of going to real stores such as Walmart or Target or even department stores. They say that they find good things at thrift stores and they say that the Salvation Army stores are better than an average store. So, I am wonder could someone who isn’t needy shop at a goodwill or Salvation Army store?

Question: How do I find someone who can use these?

I got a new vacuum cleaner to replace a broken one, and I still have two unopened packs of bags and a belt that fit the broken one. I offered the bags and the belt on my local freecycle group, but I got no hits for them. I know there are people who do use those bags, as they still sell them at stores, but I’m not going to hang out in the vacuum aisle at Kmart until someone picks up those bags to say, “I’ve got some you can have for free.” I hate to throw these bags and belt away. I suppose I could just drop them off at Goodwill, but the problem with that is that they throw half the donations they get into their dumpsters and I don’t want to risk that. I want to keep them OUT of the landfill, if possible.

And if anyone on answers wants them, they’re Eureka type AA, and I’m emailable!

Answer: List them on eBay! I bet someone will buy them.

This just occurred to me. If you really want to save them from the landfill, consider taking them to a vacuum repair shop. Free parts for them and youre not wasting them.

Question: What’s your opinion about places like GoodWill and other thrift strores?

I donate a small amount of clothes to Goodwill almost every year and a friend bought it to my attention that she didn’t believe it was a good idea because the Goodwill sells the clothes instead of giving them away.

My argument was that they also give you a receipt for tax purposes if you itemize your deductions every year.

But for some reason, I always thought they gave out charity donations to the homeless every year, am I right?

Answer: Goodwill is not really a charity that focuses on the homeless specifically. They're more geared toward helping disadvantaged people find jobs. The money from donated materials typically goes toward job training and placement. I like what they do because it's providing people with skills and jobs, so they can maybe one day be able to pay it forward. As far as taxes, all charities will give you a receipt for deduction itemization, so if you want to donate specifically to an organization that's geared toward the homeless, you should.
