Question: Charities call me and let me feel guilty. How to avoid this?

I receive many calls from charities and non-goverment organizations asking me for a contribution. I don’t care if anyone gives money to them but I do not intend to share my taxed income at this point.
.
They usually speak a “sad dog eyes” language and it makes me feel guilty to refuse them. I registered in do-not-call list but charities are extempt from it.
.
Any idea how to avoid feeling guilty when not contributing? I consider it as some kind of blackmailing. I think this is different compared to say if someone asks for a cigarette, they just ask some neutral way perhaps.

Answer: "Guilty" is not something that comes upon you from outside. No one can "make" you feel guilty. Guilty is a choice you make. It has nothing to do with whether you actually ARE guilty or not...it has to do with a conflict between what you believe ("I really should contribute something to this cause, because the people they represent really need help!") and the actions you take (not making a contribution).

Keep foremost in your mind that you get to decide to whom you contribute money or time or effort, and to whom not. They may work at you, but you may hang up.

Question: Working for charities in the UK?

I’ve been working the same job for the last 12 years and I’m currently looking for another job.
I’d really like to work for a charity, any idea how easy it is to find paid charity work in the UK? I’d be looking for something in Cardiff for around £15,000 a year and I don’t really mind what type of work it is. Any suggestions?
Erm no obviously I wasn’t expecting to earn £15,000 in a charity shop (although branch manager do earn around that much).

I was thinking administrative work or maybe something involved with helping asylum seekers.

Answer: I'm guessing you don't want to work in a Charity Shop... right? Maybe be involved with admin or organisation in some way?

I would suggest, firstly, that you look online for registerd charies, and locate any that are based in or around Cardiff, unless you are willing to move house. Then, to contact those charities and tell them you would like to work for a charity, as a career, and ascertain from them as to what openings they have, and what their annual pay is. I think Binary might be right in a sense, but I think the organisational side, and the getting "involved" might be a little more rewarding than working in a shop, and I feel this is more what you're looking for.

Good luck with your search. I hope this helps. :-)

Ok... I'm back, after a bit of a look around. You might try www.nspcc.org.uk who do have a branch in Wales. Scroll to the bottom left of the page and click on 'View the latest employment opportunities at the NSPCC. Also this one lists jobs in Cardiff - www.1job.co.uk/group-jobs.php/11530/Cardiff%20City/14/Health,%20Care%20and%20Community%20Jobs

I hope they help. Good luck. :-)
