Question: How do you know your christmas donations are going to the starving and homeless?

and not to greedy managers that you hear so negatively about, , i want to donate to the salvation army or some other charity to feed the homeless at christmas, but unless i can go out personally and hand them the money or food, how do i REALLY know if its going to good use, ive heard some horror stories that the managers drive around in flashy cars (maybe not the salvation army) but it has been documented that only 15% of any donating goes to the actual people mostly needs it. is it a con, how do you actually know where its going. in proof.

Answer: For Thanksgiving, I donated to a family that lives near by. I know the father lost his job, mother has health problems and they have kids of various ages. I did up a big box with a turkey and all the fixings and threw in a bunch of things for them to at least have a nice dinner. Not knowing how to give it, I simply knocked on their door the Monday before Thanksgiving and told them I had all this extra food I didn't need and wanted them to have it. They were so grateful and happy. For Christmas, I'm going to do the same. I know it will be useful, needed items going to a family that I know really needs the help. I learned that this is the true spirit of Christmas. My husband and I no longer give each other gifts. We have what we need and want the folks in need to at least have a happy holiday. So, if you personally know of a family near by in need.......and that could be as close as your next door neighbor these days, help them out. This way you KNOW where it is going and to those who really need it. I see their kids could use new winter coats. So, I got their sizes and will buy that for them, along with a few items I know the whole family will enjoy. I never felt my money more well spent. Merry and blessed Christmas to you and your family.

If you want to help your favorite charity, but are not sure how to do so, there are a number of creative donation options available through most major organizations. Whether it’s a donation of time, money or objects, most charities are in big need of any assistance they can get. Even old cars, boats and trailers can translate into cash in the charity’s hands, and a tax deduction for you.

The number of charities that accept donations of cars, boats and RVs are many and include such notables as the American Diabetes Association, Salvation Army and more. Here are a few things you need to know before donating cars or boats to nonprofits:

* Condition. Some agencies only accept vehicles in fully workable condition or close to it. Others will take push, pull or drag models. It all depends on the agency and what they intend the use for. Oftentimes, those agencies that accept push and pull models intend to rehab and sell them or just outright sell them to make money for their charitable operations.

* Transportation. Some agencies will arrange for pickups, others will not. If your donation isn’t operable, you’ll want to know this information.

* Tax deductions. Donations to certified nonprofits will, or should, result in tax deduction statements. It’s a good idea to have a basic understanding of the vehicle’s value and get the donation statement. This can result in a big tax deduction at the end of the year.

* Designated use. Some agencies will allow you to designate what program or programs you’d like to benefit from your gift. If this is the case with the agency you’re intending to donate to, explore their programs and make the choice.

So why do nonprofits need cars, trucks, boats and RVs? The answer to that depends on the agency. There are three main reasons why nonprofits accept these items as donations:

* Resale. Some agencies simply clean up and resell the donations to help them bankroll their charity efforts. At auction, cars, trucks, boats and more can bring them sizeable amounts that really assist in their efforts.

* Agency reuse. Depending on the quality of the vehicles donated, the agency itself might be able to use them for its own fleet. Nonprofits that help elderly people get to their medical appointments or deliver food, for example, can benefit from having solid, workable cars donated to assist them in this mission. It costs a lot for a nonprofit to buy cars, and when they’re donated, their operating funds can go on the things that really matter.

* Reuse for clients. Some agencies, especially those that help people get back on their feet, try to provide working vehicles for their clients. The outright donation of a workable car, for example, could end up in the hands of a single mother working to make ends meet. No strings attached, the car donation can help her get to work, take care of her kids and more.

Question: Charities that pick-up donations from walk-up buildings in NYC?

I live in a 5 floor walk-up building in nyc. i have a lot of items that i want to donate to charity. I have had salvation army pick up items before but I had to carry all items down to the street for the pick-up. Trouble is I have a bad wrist injury and I can’t carry this heavy stuff downstairs. Does anyone know any NYC charities that will actually climb the stairs of my building to pick up all these items from my apartment? Thanks.

Answer: Ask Goodwill. I am not sure about their policy in NYC. You might have to hire a hauler to take your things. Not free but it's hard with no elevator and a bad wrist.

In the US today it’s possible to donate a vehicle (usually a car, but it can be a truck, RV, boat or any form of transportation) to selected charities, and in return be able to claim a tax deduction on a personal income tax return. For values that are less than $500, the value of the tax deduction comes from the donor’s own estimate of the car’s value, even if the charity receives less money for actually selling the car. In 2005, the IRS rules were tightened to prevent donors from pumping up their deductions. Under the new rules, the deduction depends on how the charity disposes of the vehicle.

If your junk or used automobile, truck, boat, motorcycle, RV or aircraft is no longer of use to you, it can still go a long way toward supporting the charity of your choice. Make sure you know where the title is when you email about a possible donation. Best of all, by not selling the car yourself, you don’t have to worry about strangers calling you to get information about where you live, or coming to your house to see the car or other vehicle.

Repairable used donate car for blind children or other vehicles can be accepted provided the vehicle is repairable for less than what the charity could sell it for. There are a few exceptions in the new tax law compared to the old tax law, regarding the fair market value section, for example, you may base your deduction on the vehicle’s fair market value if the charity ends up selling it to a needy individual at a discounted price or if the charity uses the car as part of its mission instead of selling it at a fair price. Charitable car donations are given to the selected recipients directly or they are sold and the money is given away as part of the charity function.

A charity organization car donation is usually picked up within one or two days of submitting the donation form. The amount you list on IRS Form 1098-C, “Contributions of Motor Vehicles, Boats, and Airplanes” will be under the gross proceeds of the deductible donation. And if you don’t plan to deduct the vehicle donation on your tax return, no further action is needed. There are similar car donation tax laws in other countries.

You may have a junk, used or old vehicle sitting on your property or on the street that you don’t use very often or at all. Cars or other vehicle that are not being used make good donations, enabling many less fortunate people to have a good means of transportation. Donating rather than selling is a good idea because there is no need to pay for any advertising, no loss of privacy and possible security risk, and no need to pay for vehicle registration, insurance or repairs to keep your car in running condition while you wait for a buyer.

Charities look at car donations from both the point of view of the donor of the car, and of the charity receiving it. The vehicle you plan to donate must not have any major parts missing. Also the donor is responsible to an extent to determine what the value is of their car donation for blind children.

One of the exceptions to the new IRS regulations allows donors to still deduct the fair market value of their vehicle, if the charity materially improves the car or vehicle. Regardless of the laws, it’s a very good idea to protect yourself by having the proper insurance coverage on your vehicle until it’s donated. In wear and tear, minor repairs and breakdowns, an average vehicle owner could easily spend $3000 per year.

Don’t let your unused vehicle go to waste just sitting around gathering rust. It’s easy to donate your car online to individual charities or to car donation programs that work for charities. Some charities that run their own program instead of hiring a car donation program middleman are discriminating about which vehicles they accept, repair and materially improve. They sell most of the donated vehicles at retail.

Also, if your car or vehicle is running, consider dropping it off at the charity yourself to save the organization from paying for towing costs. After making a connection by email or phone with the charity or charity program, just fill out the forms they give you and have them ready for the driver when he/she comes to pick up the car.

There are many charitable Donate My Car Help Blind Children programs to choose from today including: Purple Heart, Kidney Foundation, Our Lady of the Wayside, Salvation Army, Goodwill Industries, Make a Wish Foundation, American Red Cross, and blind, Jewish and cancer charities among many others.
