Time charitable contributions
People often donate time to a charity. They are making time charitable contributions as opposed to monetary or cash charitable contributions. However, donating time can be complicated to claim tax deduction. Generally time charitable contributions are not tax deductible.
Is the value of time charitable contributions deductible?
 |
No. The value of your time charitable contribution services is not deductible. However, your out of pocket expenses count as cash charitable contributions.
Although you cannot deduct time charitable contributions, you can deduct your cash charitable contributions. For example, you can deduce the costs of the cakes you donate to the church bake sales and your scout uniforms if you are the leader. |
Gas deduction and mileage deduction of volunteer work
If you drive to and from your volunteer work, you can deduct either the actual costs of your gas and oil or your mileage at 12 cents per mile.
Too much charitable in one year (Charitable contributions of more than 20% adjusted gross income)
If your charitable contributions exceed 20% of your adjusted gross income, your charitable tax deduction may be limited. You may encounter these charitable contribution tax deduction limitations in years when you give significant charitable contributions or in years when you have low adjusted gross income.
