If you contribute more than you can make a tax deduction in one year, you have not completely lost the tax deduction. You can carry your tax deduction forward and use the tax deduction next year and the next year and so on. You can carry forward your tax deduction for 5 years, but you must use the deduction in five years or you lose it.
