Itemized deductions

Your gifts to charity are itemized deductions if certain conditions are met.

Is the charity qualified for charitable contribution tax deduction? 

The charitable organization must be operated for one of the following purposes:

  • charitable
  • religious
  • educational
  • scientific
  • literary
  • organizations for the prevention of cruelty to animals
  • organizations conducting national or international amateur sports competitions
Disclosure of eligibility for charitable contribution tax deductions

Many charitable organizations solicit funds in fund raising events. If a charitable organization solicit funds and is not eligible for charitable contribution tax deduction, then the organization must state as such in every solicitation.

If you have a question about whether an organization qualifies for charitable giving tax deductions, refer to IRS Publication 78 which is free. IRS Publication 78 lists most of the organizations that qualify as charitable organizations and therefore any charitable contributions to these organizations qualify for charitable contributions IRS tax deduction.
